GENERAL REPORT -
During the season at least 53 known members fished one or more competitions (there were certainly others who didn’t score points or didn’t weigh-in for various reasons). Some of the Southern reports, (if seen on Facebook etc.), referred to numbers fishing without names being given, and stating only those three out of seven fishing, catching etc. It is a shame that the Southern section does not report more fully on the website, as I’m sure we are missing out on promoting the BFTA to people in that region.
Further analysis of the second year of the ‘new’ scoring system showed up more anomalies than in the last year’s results.
Name 2017 5 Old Points 2017 Positions 6 Old Points Place (Old) Carl Ward 48 First 7 First 111224 11 First = Dave Carries 44Fourth 8 Second= 111234 12 Second = Andre Russell 46 Second = 8 Second = 111234 12 Second = Martin Mayers 39 Sixth 8 Second = 111234 12 Second = Ric Dunnet 46 Second = 10 Fifth 222223 13 Fifth
• Carl was the winner this year because he won matches with a greater numbers of entrants. Interestingly, he would have also won on 5 point scores on the old system. • However, if as once suggested at an AGM, if six point scores were counted for the Trophy Competition, Dave C. Martin, and Andre would have tied for second place with identical place scores – thus necessitating a seventh place countback. • Under the old system Carl would have still triumphed and taken the Cup, because he had a greater number of first second places on a 5 point count. (Three firsts and two seconds). • Andre would have been second equal with Martin and Dave Carrie under the old system. (All had three firsts, two seconds and a third place), but Ric. would have been fifth in the table. (Five second places and a third). • Martin did very well this season, and as stated above would have been equal second with Andre and Dave Carrie, whereas he actually came sixth under the new system. • Further analysis, and larger scoring counts would throw up even more anomalies for say five, six or seven comps under the new system of points - resulting from numbers attending. But I suggest leaving well alone until a problem arises!
SOUTHERN SECTION
• The system used in the Southern section to determine the Snowbee Southern Bowl Trophy was sorted out by the men down there. It was a difficult system to analyse, because many of the comps were fished on Brown trout C&R waters. The only way of determining match positions without distressing fish under C&R conditions has been to count the numbers of fish caught by each fisherman regardless of their weight.
• The numbers of members attending comps in the South didn’t, (I think), ever exceed eight.
• Under our old scoring system there would have been some potential contenders for the Jim Clements Trophy, if purely done by place positions in their matches, - if they had completed a few more.
• Dave Williams has won their Snowbee Trophy this year. This would have been well deserved and hard won. Ruan Burman also regularly came near the top of the table, (he is also an exceptional fisherman), as is Kevin Primmer who gained several second places.
In Conclusion:
Personally – on balance I think the system we are currently scoring with is fairer, and rewards fishermen who triumph in arguably more testing competitions to win where greater number make up the competition. It should also encourage members to try and persuade more members to attend if they feel very competitive and desperate to win the silverware.
Apologies for the bad formatting of the tables above I did previously state that this website doesn't like importing tables spreadsheets etc - I've left them in in case anybody really wishes to try and work out what the differences were. Suffice to say it has all been fairly decided and what is above is really only of academic interest.
